It’s almost time to start wrapping up the dog days of summer. As the seasons begin to shift, so does the weather - bringing more frequent thunderstorms, wind, and heavy rain. While some dogs barely notice the change, others can become extremely anxious or fearful during bad weather.

Storm anxiety in dogs is a real and common issue. The loud cracks of thunder, flashes of lightning, and changes in barometric pressure can cause distress that leads to behaviors like barking, hiding, pacing, or destructive chewing. This isn’t just a case of a nervous pup, it can be a serious reaction. Fortunately, with the right preparation, calming tools, and training, you can help your dog feel safer and more secure when the skies turn stormy.

Distractions:

  • Toys, chews and treats are all great ways to get your dog focused on something they love. Interactive toys and games can help keep them distracted longer and help tire them out.

  • Background noise, like music or the TV, can help provide comfort while also distracting your pup from the loud noises outside that can be triggering..

  • As always, cuddling with your dog is always a great distraction (for both of you).

Consistent Calming:

  • A ThunderShirt® is great for dogs who are scared of storms because it helps calm their anxiety using gentle, constant pressure, which can have a soothing effect on the nervous system.

  • ThunderEase® is another great tool for consistent calming and stress relief. Our products mimic the calming pheromone that a mother dog emits while nursing her puppies, which helps your dog to feel calmer and more comfortable in stressful situations. Both the ThunderEase® Diffuser and the ThunderEase® Collar are great options for consistent, every-day calming support - especially great for areas that are prone to pop-up storms or consistent hurricane threats.

DID YOU KNOW? ThunderEase® utilizes ADAPTIL® calming pheromones, backed by 25 years of research and is the #1 Vet Recommended Brand of dog calming pheromones.

Patience:

As always, it is important to be patient with your dog while trying new methods of calming. Remember, your dog doesn’t want to be scared and stressed! Their reactions are how they communicate with us; and similarly that is how they read our emotions. Our frustration can cause them more stress as well.

All dogs are unique. Results may vary depending on behavioral training, the presence of other pets and other environmental factors.
