Fireworks can trigger fear in many dogs because of the unpredictable noise, vibration, and flashes. A few preparations before summer holidays can make a big difference.

Create a safe indoor space

Set up a quiet area before fireworks start:

  • Use a crate, closet, bathroom, or interior room with familiar bedding

  • Close curtains/blinds to reduce flashes

  • Add white noise, calming music, or a TV to mask sound

  • Keep favorite toys or chew items nearby

Exercise earlier in the day

Give your dog a long walk, play session, or enrichment activity before evening fireworks begin. A mentally and physically tired dog is often less reactive.

Use positive distractions

  • Frozen stuffed toys

  • Long-lasting chews

  • Snuffle mats or treat puzzles

  • Scatter feeding indoors

These activities can redirect attention away from the noise.

Utilize calming products

Practice desensitization ahead of time

Weeks before fireworks season:

  • Play low-volume fireworks recordings

  • Pair the sounds with treats and play

  • Gradually increase volume over time

This can help reduce sensitivity in the long term.

Talk to your veterinarian for severe anxiety

If your dog:

  • Tries to escape

  • Damages doors/windows

  • Stops eating

  • Trembles heavily or panics for hours

A combination of preparation, calming products and distraction toys/chews can help you and your pup have a more enjoyable summer firework experience.
