Prepare Your Pup for Summer Fireworks
Fireworks can trigger fear in many dogs because of the unpredictable noise, vibration, and flashes. A few preparations before summer holidays can make a big difference.
Create a safe indoor space
Set up a quiet area before fireworks start:
-
Use a crate, closet, bathroom, or interior room with familiar bedding
-
Close curtains/blinds to reduce flashes
-
Add white noise, calming music, or a TV to mask sound
-
Keep favorite toys or chew items nearby
Exercise earlier in the day
Give your dog a long walk, play session, or enrichment activity before evening fireworks begin. A mentally and physically tired dog is often less reactive.
Use positive distractions
-
Frozen stuffed toys
-
Long-lasting chews
-
Snuffle mats or treat puzzles
-
Scatter feeding indoors
These activities can redirect attention away from the noise.
Utilize calming products
-
ThunderShirt® Calming Vests
-
ThunderEase® Pheromone diffusers, Sprays and/or Collars
-
Vet-approved calming supplements like ThunderBites® Calming Chews
Practice desensitization ahead of time
Weeks before fireworks season:
-
Play low-volume fireworks recordings
-
Pair the sounds with treats and play
-
Gradually increase volume over time
This can help reduce sensitivity in the long term.
Talk to your veterinarian for severe anxiety
If your dog:
-
Tries to escape
-
Damages doors/windows
-
Stops eating
-
Trembles heavily or panics for hours
A combination of preparation, calming products and distraction toys/chews can help you and your pup have a more enjoyable summer firework experience.
